Install ByteBarn POS

For owners. ByteBarn POS runs on Windows and Linux. Install it on each computer you’ll use as a till.

Get the latest version from bytebarn.org/pos. It offers the right file for your computer:

  • Windows: the installer, ending in -setup.exe.
  • Linux: the file ending in .AppImage.

Older versions and release notes are on the releases page.

  1. Run the installer you downloaded.
  2. Follow its steps. It installs for your Windows user account, so it doesn’t need an administrator password.
  3. Open ByteBarn POS from the Start menu.
  1. Make the .AppImage file executable: right-click it, open Properties → Permissions, and tick Allow executing file as program. Or, in a terminal:

    Terminal window
    chmod +x ByteBarn*.AppImage
  2. Double-click it to start ByteBarn POS.

You’ll see the Welcome screen. Create Business sets up a new business on this computer; see Set up your business. To add this computer to a business you already run on another till, see Join an existing business.

Everything is stored on this computer, so the till works with or without an internet connection.

ByteBarn POS updates itself:

  1. Each time it opens, it checks for a newer version. While one downloads, the screen shows Downloading update…. You can keep selling.
  2. The update is installed when you close the app (Installing update…), and the new version opens next time. An update never interrupts a sale.

Without an internet connection, it simply checks again the next time it opens.
