Open and close the till

For cashiers. Opening the till records the cash you start with. Closing it compares what’s in the drawer with what should be there, so a shortage or overage shows up the same day.

You can sell without opening the till, but then there’s nothing to count the drawer against.

  1. Go to Till Closing.
  2. Select Open Till.
  3. Enter the cash you’re starting with in Opening Float (KES) and select Open Till.

The screen then shows your Opening Float and Expected Cash Now, which goes up with every cash sale and down with every cash refund.

Only cash counts here. M-Pesa, card and credit payments don’t go through the drawer.

  1. Go to Till Closing and select Close Till.
  2. Count the cash in the drawer and enter it in Counted Cash (KES).
  3. Check the Variance: what you counted minus what was expected. KES 0 means the drawer is right; a minus means it’s short.
  4. If it’s out, say why in Note (optional), for example “gave KES 10 too much change”.
  5. Select Close Till.

Expected cash is the opening float, plus every cash payment taken, minus every cash refund given, since the till was opened.

The history under the open till lists every session: who opened it, when, and when it closed. Managers and admins also see each session’s Expected, Counted and Variance; cashiers don’t.
