Whole-shilling amounts
M-Pesa, cash and most Kenyan banks don’t deal in cents. With Whole KES amounts only turned on, every amount a customer pays at the till comes out in whole shillings, so M-Pesa and cash can always pay it in full.
It’s on by default for businesses using KES.
What gets rounded
Section titled “What gets rounded”Each of these rounds to the nearest shilling, with 50 cents rounding up:
| What | Example |
|---|---|
| A selling price entered without VAT | KES 4,315 + 16% VAT = 5,005.40, saved as 5,005 |
| A percentage discount | 7% off 1,250 = 87.50, given as 88 |
| VAT added on top of a sale | 16% on 1,255 = 200.80, charged as 201 |
| Part of a line being refunded | Refunds of one item at a time always add up to what was paid |
The VAT included figure on a receipt keeps its cents. It’s a breakdown of the total, not an amount anyone pays.
Amounts without cents show without “.00”: KES 5,005, not KES 5,005.00.
Round prices saved before
Section titled “Round prices saved before”Products priced before this setting was on can still have cents. ByteBarn POS lists them for you:
- Go to Settings → Payment Methods.
- Under Whole KES amounts only, check the list of products with cents and what each price becomes.
- Select Round N prices, then Round prices to confirm.
Every till gets the new prices. You can still edit any price afterwards.
Turn it off
Section titled “Turn it off”Go to Settings → Payment Methods and switch off Whole KES amounts only, then save. Turn it off only if your business does take payments in cents.
