Take an M-Pesa payment
For cashiers. There are two ways to take M-Pesa:
- A prompt on the customer’s phone (STK Push): the till asks M-Pesa to send the customer a payment request, and they confirm it with their M-Pesa PIN. The till knows when it’s paid. This is only offered once your business has set up M-Pesa in Settings → M-Pesa.
- Typing the code: the customer pays to your till or paybill number themselves, and you type the code from the confirmation message they received.
M-Pesa only moves whole shillings. If a total has cents, see Whole-shilling amounts.
Send a prompt to the customer’s phone
Section titled “Send a prompt to the customer’s phone”- Add the items and tap M-Pesa.
- Select Request KES … on phone.
- Enter the customer’s number in Customer M-Pesa Number (07XX XXX XXX) and select Send prompt.
- Ask the customer to enter their M-Pesa PIN on their phone. The till shows Waiting for payment until it hears back.
- When it shows Payment received, complete the sale.
The M-Pesa reference goes on the receipt by itself.
If the customer cancels, doesn’t answer, or doesn’t have enough in M-Pesa, the till shows Payment didn’t go through with M-Pesa’s reason. Select Try again to send another prompt, or take the payment another way.
Type the M-Pesa code
Section titled “Type the M-Pesa code”- Add the items and tap M-Pesa.
- Once the customer has paid, enter the code from their confirmation message in M-Pesa
Code (Or type the M-Pesa code when prompts are set up), for example
QK7X8Y9Z1A. - Select Complete Sale.
The receipt shows Paid via M-Pesa with the code under Reference. The code is optional, but without it there’s nothing on the receipt to match against your M-Pesa statement.
Part M-Pesa, part something else
Section titled “Part M-Pesa, part something else”Tap M-Pesa and a second method, such as Cash, and enter how much each one covers. When a total has cents, a prompt can charge the whole shillings by M-Pesa and leave the cents for the other payment.
